Characterisation of aluminium black dross before and after stepwise salt-phase dissolution in non-aqueous solvents

Aqueous leaching to recover salts from black dross is accompanied by hazardous gas generation. The gas-generating phases vary significantly across differently sourced dross. challenge for the industry how accurately qualify and quantify problematic components of dross, especially minor reactive phases. This paper employed XRF, EDX, XRD, Raman FTIR analyse two industrial samples various sources. A novel pre-treatment method before characterisation was devised using water-free glycerol anhydrous ethanol remove major salt components, without reacting results show that around 80 % existent in had been removed successfully through pre-treatment. facilitated determination characterised XRF little effect on spectroscopy. ammonia-generating nitride phase detected FTIR. FTIR, moreover, allowed successful identification carbide.
